According to the Bhagavata Purana, Vamana is the fifth avatar of Vishnu who appeared as a dwarf Brahmin to humble the demon king Mahabali. When granted three paces of land, he grew to cosmic size, covering the heavens and earth in two steps, and sent Bali to the netherworld with the third."
