Hanuman (IAST: Hanumān) is a beloved Hindu god & the son of wind-god Vayu. His is depicted as a muscular humanoid figure with a monkey head. He is one of the central characters of the Hindu epic Ramayana. In the epic battle to save his master and Lord Ram's life Hanuman assumed the form of 'Panchamukhi' or Five Faced. This form is endowed with many weapons like the parashu (battle axe), chakra (disc), gada (mace), trishul (trident) and the khanda (sword).
As he battles & solves problems he discovers within himself the horse, the lion, the eagle and the wild boar. It reminds us to rise above the constraints of biology, through faith, patience and perseverance. This image of Hanuman is used as a strong tantric symbol to shield against negative energies. Hanuman is sometimes portrayed as the patron god of martial arts such as wrestling and acrobatics, as well as activities such as meditation and diligent scholarship. He also revered as a symbol of nationalism and resistance to persecution.
