Lakshmi’s Blessing: Abundance of the Open Palm
Lakshmi’s Blessing: Abundance of the Open Palm
This exquisite sculpture integrates multiple symbols of prosperity and protection, representing Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu deity of wealth, fortune, and abundance. Molded into the shape of an open palm, which traditionally signifies the Abhaya Mudra, this gesture offers reassurance and dispels fear, underscoring Lakshmi's role as a benefactor who provides blessings and safety to her devotees. The palm also includes the intricate Dharmachakra or "wheel of law," an emblem of divine law and the eternal cycle of life which Lakshmi supports through her nurturing abundance.
Goddess Lakshmi is depicted with four arms, a common iconography that emphasizes her omnipotent nature. In this sculpture, two of her hands are shown in the Abhaya Mudra, promising protection and freedom from fear. Another hand gracefully releases a stream of gold coins, symbolizing the unending wealth and prosperity that she bestows upon her worshippers. The remaining hands hold lotus flowers, signifying spiritual purity and enlightenment, elements that are inherently linked to true prosperity in Hindu philosophy.
Uniquely, the sculpture features Lakshmi mounted on an owl, a vahana (vehicle) that is less commonly associated with her compared to the elephant. In Hindu mythology, the owl signifies wisdom and vigilant observation, traits that complement the discerning aspect of wealth management. The owl's ability to navigate in the darkness also metaphorically aligns with Lakshmi's guidance in helping devotees find their way through the trials and tribulations of life.
