Yoga Guru in Urdhwa Padmasana (Lotus Headstand)
Urdhva Padmasana (Upward Lotus Pose) is an inversion yoga pose which is a combination of Padmasana (Lotus Pose) and Salamba Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand Pose). This is also an advanced variation of Padma Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand Lotus Pose), with the additional practice of Uddhiyana Bandha (Abdominal Lock), and Jalandhara Bandha (Chin Lock).
Upward Lotus Pose requires a strong foundation and understanding of the breath, lock (bandha), balance, stability, and strength. The strength of the shoulders, hips, back, legs and abdominal muscles, along with the flexibility of the knees, ankles, and hips are essential to move into Upward Lotus Pose. Transiting from Padma Sarvangasana, the hips are flexed and with the support of the bandhas the torso remains in balance.
The practice of Urdhva Padmasana can be included in hip opening yoga sequences at an advanced level, which later will help students in meditation. Mostly practiced as a closing sequence in Ashtanga Yoga, Upward Lotus Pose can be included in Vinyasa Yoga or Chakra Yoga, to build endurance and bring balance, respectively. This pose activates your energy points with the neurons also being stimulated which further helps the brain receive the signals keeping the nervous system stimulated too.
